the fine print
Why "free DR" is a myth: if a domain is on the Public Suffix List (is-a.dev is), every subdomain is treated as a separate root domain by Google and Ahrefs. You start at DR 0. The play is a clean separate root you control — earn links to it, then it feeds your main site.
| Service | What you get | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| is-a.dev | Free *.is-a.dev via GitHub PR, minutes to live | Individuals only (no orgs); non-commercial; maintainers ban AI-drafted PRs ("it WILL always get it wrong"); on the Public Suffix List so your subdomain is its own root domain — no DR/authority inheritance from is-a.dev |
| js.org | Free *.js.org for JS projects via GitHub PR | Project must be substantial open-source JS; manual review |
| eu.org | Free *.eu.org subdomains | Manual review, ~14-day approval (aggregator-reported) |
| is-a-good.dev / thedev.id | Free dev subdomains | Smaller communities, less scrutiny (aggregator-reported, unverified) |
| GitHub Pages | Free hosting + *.github.io | Your project is public unless you pay; no custom-domain analytics server-side |
| Netlify free | Free hosting + SSL | 300 build minutes/mo, 100GB bandwidth; credit-capped |
| Vercel Hobby | Free hosting | Non-commercial only (hobby tier ToS); commercial use requires Pro |
